“Collapse” is a 2009 documentary film directed by Chris Smith. The film is based on the newsletter self-published by former Los Angeles police officer turned freelance reporter, Michael Ruppert. The newsletter “From the Wilderness”, focused on the bold prediction made by Ruppert about the current financial crisis of the United States. He made this prediction during the time when several Washington and Wall Street analysts were in denial of the upcoming economic disaster.
In the film, Ruppert shares his story and opinions about the financial problems that he sees will happen to the US. Although he uses the same information shared in the news and internet, he has a completely different interpretation of what is happening. He touches on matters such as the increasing oil prices and when fossil fuel will eventually run out. Although most experts discuss this problem as if there are ready solutions, Ruppert on the other hand is quick to raise the alarm. He hopes that with this film, people will try to find ways not to cope with whatever the future may bring.
