Bloody Cartoons

“Bloody Cartoons” is a socio-political documentary directed by respected filmmaker Karsten Kjær and first televised in 2007 as a part of the “Why Democracy?” series by BBC. The film centers on 12 simple drawings published by a Danish provincial paper. He illustrations created caused quite a stir among Muslims. The film highlights questions how this spat with the Islamic community may be forcing everyone else to limit their thoughts, actions, and words.

In Bloody Cartoons, the connection between freedom of expression and democracy is the central theme of the film. Most people know that both principles can and must exist together. However, there are moments when one person practices his democratic right and it violates the rights of others. This film questions how democracy can be influenced by religion and if certain religious sects practice democracy.
