Study: Cannabis Found to Boost Growth of Brain Cells

The Endocannabinoid Research Group of the Institute of Biomolecular chemistry in Italy are performing a controversial study that aims to determine the true effects of major non-THC phytocannabinoids on neural stem progenitor cells (NSPCs). These cells play central role in the proper performance of the brain.

Scientists have tested three compounds including cannabigerol, cannabidiol, and cannabichromene (CBC). Their studies proved that CBC has a positive effect on the growth of NSPCs in the mice they tested. They also discovered that exposure to CBC led to higher ATP levels during differentiation of NSPCs. This suggests that CBC improves the viability of NSPCs as it lowers the differentiation into astroglia.
