The HeLa immortal cell line is a commonly used cell line in biomedical research. Without her knowledge, these cells were extracted from the health and cancerous parts of the cervix of Henrietta Lacks before she died. To this day, her cells have continuously grown in number and billions have been distributed to various laboratories worldwide. In fact, if all these cells were to be combined, it would weigh up to 400 times her original weight.
“The Way of All Flesh” is a documentary that shows the incredible contributions of the HeLa cells to modern science and even politics affecting various governments and presidents of different countries. It has also been said that Lacks’ cells were involved in the cold war as scientists believed it held the key to eternal life.
