Science of Steroids

“Science of Steroids” is a short documentary released by National Geographic in 2008. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Chris Lofft, the film exposes the true effects of steroids on the human body.

For the past couple of decades, several athletes have turned to performance-enhancing drugs to enhance their play. Despite being declared as illegal, the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) or more popularly called as steroids has increased. What most do not know is that these artificial substances are the by-products of testosterone male hormones.

The film details how steroids affect the body as it travels from the bloodstream, reaching the cells and attaching themselves to androgen receptors. When they pick up molecules and combine with the DNA inside the muscle cells, a special kind of protein agent is produced. This accelerates the growth of the cells including the muscle cells faster than normal. However, the body is unable to adapt to this change properly leading to various health problems such as increase in blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Science of Steroids also features natural methods of increasing body pr muscle mass and illustrates the natural development of muscles.
