The documentary film, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon, is a culmination of 20 years’ worth of time in research through the exploration of the conundrum brought about by curious ancient remains of large sizes found in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico (northwestern region). An important discovery concerning the construction techniques of the Chacoan people emerged between 850 and 1150 AD. At this point of time, the Chacoan people had envisioned and actually built desert-based large-scale temple-like structures following a pattern that seems to be celestial in nature. By utilizing a number of advances in imaging techniques including aerial footage, time lapse footage, computer modelling; in addition to classical approaches such as interviews with Chacoan experts, it has become apparent that the Chacoan civilization patterned their edifices after relative to orientation and location of both the sun and moon.
Contradictory to popular belief, the film argues that the Chaco canyon was actually a hub of astronomic and cosmologic pursuits and endeavours instead of a primordial trading post; further highlighting the presence of cosmic imagery along the roads. What the Chacoans lack in formal written language as a means of understanding them, they make up in their culture can be defined by their majestic architecture and enigmatic imagery embedded on all of their constructions.
