Nightmare in Manchuria

“Nightmare in Manchuria” is a documentary film released in 1998 that detailed the inhumane actions performed by Unit 731. The film exposed Unit 731 as a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit that was formed by the Japanese Army from 1937 to 1945. Several lethal human experimentation was performed in this facility and it has also been reported that Unit 731 was responsible for most of the heinous crimes done by the Japanese at that time.

Initially, Unit 731 was created in order to create weapons of mass destruction that were meant for the Chinese and even the Soviet people. Over 10,000 people were said to have been brought to their laboratory to be subjects of the experiments they conducted. In the 2002 International Symposium on the Crimes of Bacteriological Warfare, it was said that they had about 580,000 subjects who underwent experimentations, most of which were Chinese and Korean.

This film brings to light the early years of chemical and biological warfare way before advanced technologies were developed. As a result, the brutality of their acts have since been condemned by the United Nations and deemed to be crimes against humanity.
