17 year-old Sam Berns was a junior at Foxboro High School in Massachusetts. He was a smart kid who, a straight A student who received top honors in school. He was also a percussion section leader in the high school marching band. To top it all off, he was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Progeria at the age of two. This is a rare, rapid aging disease.
Shortly before his death, Sam was a guest presenter at a TED conference. He shared his insights on how a person can life a happy and fulfilling life despite living with a very rare genetic disorder. HBO televised a documentary entitled Life According to Sam on October 21, 2013 which is a biography of the colorful life Sam had.
