This short documentary produced by Al Jazeera and directed by Nick Ahlmark and Nicole Precel tells the story of the Hmong ethnic minority in Vietnam. We follow the life and everyday activities of one Hmong midwife as she goes about doing her responsibilities and duties in her community.
The Mountain Midwives of Vietnam shows us how these midwives provide maternal care to the women of the Chi Ca commune. We see the trials that she deals with on a daily basis; from travelling through the harsh mountain terrain to get to the places where her services are needed to attempting to change the Hmong’s cultural views and attitudes towards maternal health.
This documentary film will help us see the many factors that help contribute to this community’s situation, being one of the areas in Northern Vietnam having the highest maternal and infant mortality rates.
