In Africa alone, over 20 million people have died because of the HIV virus mostly due to the fact that the medication was very expensive in the past. Fortunately, ARV medicine is more accessible to many as its price has become more affordable. This has led to the increase in the number of people being treated in Africa to 4 million people who live relatively healthy lives thanks to ARV medicine.
“The Lazarus Effect” is a 30-minute documentary film made in 2010 directed by Lance Bangs and co-produced by HBO and AIDS awareness group RED. It aims to increase the awareness of the public about the positive results of anti-retroviral medicine to cure HIV/AIDS. The film features ruminations from HIV positive people living in Zambia, giving viewers a look into the everyday struggles of people who are living with HIV/AIDS.
