Plan of Action: How the Spinal Cord Controls Movement

“Plan of Action: How the Spinal Cord Controls Movement” is an hour-long video about the findings of professor Thomas M. Jessell, Ph. D. He teaches biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the Columbia University in New York and is a member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators.

Jessell shares details about his studies regarding the ability of the neural circuits to control human movements. He shows through the neural circuits how the wiring of the brain controls certain actions and behaviors. One example he shared is the incredible hand-eye coordination of renowned baseball player Lou Gehrig. He is able to throw the ball with accuracy and speed making him one of the best athletes to ever play the game. Despite this ability, Gehrig succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles.
