Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong’o Speech on Black Beauty

A year ago, the name Lupita Nyong’o wasn’t familiar to us in any way. Now, people all over the world know and respect that name and that person.

Lupita Nyong’o is a Kenyan-Mexican film actress. Aside from acting, she also dabbles into directing for both films and music videos. She finished a degree in film and theatre studies from Hampshire College. Her career, like that of many other great names in the business, started out quietly. She began working as a part of the production crew in several other Hollywood projects. She then decided to pursue her studies further at Yale School of Drama wherein she completed her master’s degree in acting. Not long after completing her postgraduate studies followed her first role in a feature film. It was in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave which was a historical drama.

This was the role that catapulted her into stardom. She received nominations left and right and awards for performance, including the prestigious Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. But it was her speech at the seventh annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon hosted by Essence magazine that transformed her from being an award-winning actress, to a role model. She talked about black beauty and how it was to grow up as a black woman. She shares her own personal struggles and the pain she felt because of the bullying and judgement she received for the shade of her skin.

Her speech moved and inspired millions of people – of every color. And she now serves as a motivation and and inspiration for other young black girls out there who are suffering from the same abuse. She has become a source of strength for them to continue on and to work hard. And aside from that, she is also proof to all those people who discriminate and judge that true beauty is skin deep.
