Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita

It has been more than a decade since the stem cell research and testing was initiated. Scientists claim that the regenerative characteristics of stem cells to cure various diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Others are already using stem cell therapy for different health reasons.

A 2007 documentary titled “Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita” tells the story of Dr. Jack Kessler, a neurologist who is in search for a cure for spinal cord injuries. The embattled physician goes against the American government to find funding for his stem cell research. Dr. Kessler was invited to become the head of the Neurology in order to find a way to cure diabetes by using embryonic stem cells. However, his daughter became paralyzed following a skiing accident and Kessler went on to focus on finding a cure for his daughter. Unfortunately, the funding for his research was vetoed by then-president George W. Bush. Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita is directed by Maria Finitzo and won the 2008 Peabody Award for its eye-opening look into stem cell research.
