Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of Mass Media

This 1988 documentary features Noam Chomsky and his lecture about his book with Edward Herman entitled Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of Mass Media. Here he and Herman attempt to analyse the news media. They push for the argument that the United States mass media is an “effective and powerful ideological institution that carries out a system-supportive propaganda function by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion”.

The book was highly influenced by an Australian social psychologist, Alex Carey. The book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of Mass Media was even dedicated to him. The title was derived from a phrase in the book Public Opinion by Walter Lippmann. Chomsky and Herman’s work paved the way for the media’s propaganda model. In 1992, a film based on the book was released, entitled Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media.
