Kurt Cobain – About a Son

This autobiographical film by A.J. Schnack shows fans and film lovers alike the life of music’s biggest icons, Kurt Cobain. Schnack has been known for his expertise in the art of nonfiction filmmaking. In 2007 he even founded the Cinema Eye Honors for these types of films.

In this movie, it starts off with Kurt Cobain providing the narration. These voice-overs were taken from his collection of interviews found in Michael Azerrad’s Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. Coupled with time-lapse and still photography, this film creates a deep sense of intimacy and closeness to the artist. But despite the abundance of photos in the movie, the actual portraits of the artist don’t show up until the latter part of the film, which ultimately creates an artistic sense of absence.

The film boasts of a rich soundtrack featuring artists such as David Bowie, The Vaselines and cheap trick. Plus there are perfect scores by the producer Steve Fish and also by Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard.
