Carts of Darkness

This 2008 documentary directed by Murray Siple under the National Film Board of Canada follows an interesting group of homeless men from North Vancouver. These men go around the city bringing along with them mall shopping carts. What they do is they collect cans and bottles. At the end of the day, they trade in these cans and bottles for money, making it their only source of income. From this daily activity spawned the extreme sport, shopping cart racing, which was invented by these men as a form of fun.

Carts of Darkness show us the everyday lives of these men. We get to see the struggles and hardships they face while living in the streets. We see the birth of a Vancouver subculture and the men behind it. This film will help us gain a better and deeper understanding of the different facets of these men who race carts.
