An Unreasonable Man

Ralph Nader is an American political activist and lawyer who gained recognition after the publication of his book Unsafe at Any Speed. In his book he criticized the safety of the American automobile manufacturers. His book got so much attention but he gained the most fame after his critique about the Chevrolet Corvair. To retaliate, General Motors hired private investigators to investigate into the background of Nader, hoping to find something they could use against him.

This documentary film directed by Henriette Mantel and Steve Skrovan follows the life and career of Nader. The first part of the film focuses on his advocacy for auto safety features. His powerful influence has mandated air bags, seat belts and proper product labelling.

The second half of the documentary features his shift in organizational strategy which is more focused on citizen power. There has been an ongoing controversy surrounding Nader after his involvement in the 2000 Presidential elections where he served as a “spoiler”. So instead of acknowledging his contribution to the safety of everyone, people instead think of him as “the man who gave the country George W. Bush”.

This documentary shows us exclusive interviews with current and former members of Nader’s independent advocacy group called Nader’s Raiders.
