In this life, we are never short of problems and obstacles. Sometimes we even feel that our lives are nothing but a series of disappointments and hardships. But then, it’s not going to be like that forever. Sooner or later, things will get better and you’ll be able to get through whatever it is that you are going through. So it is important that you keep a positive attitude and never give up on your situation and on yourself.
Keeping a positive attitude is not that difficult. You would be surprised how simple it is to change your seemingly bad day and make it into a good one. What is this magical remedy, you may ask? Well, it’s actually a smile. The simple curving of your lips could do wonders in improving not only your mood and self-esteem, but it affects the people around you as well.
Here are a few things that would happen the moment you wear a smile:
You become less stressed.
Whenever we are in stressful situations we tend to carry-over our anxious feelings in the contortion of our faces. So it is a bit easy to spot someone who is stressed. Just look at their face. Most if not all of them would have on a frown, a pout or eyebrows that are close together. The tension that they are feeling is literally translated in their face. Regardless of how stressful a situation you’re in, you shouldn’t frown. It does nothing but add to your stress and anxiety. Instead, you should take a deep breath and smile. Not only does it relax your face, but it sends signals to your brain telling it to relax. So in a short while, your breathing would begin to slow down and your heart rate would become normal. And now you are in a more suited state to think of solutions to whatever’s stressing you out.
You become instantly more attractive.
This is an actual, scientific fact. Based on the research conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, majority of American adults believe that a smile can make more attractive and appealing. When you take a picture, what does the cameraman always tell you to do? That’s right, he tells you to smile.
You become happier.
Our body is truly a marvelous thing. It contains a series of interconnections. It is a playing field wherein signals get tossed and passed from one system to another. This comes into play even when we do minute changes in our facial expressions. So when we smile, our body sends a signal to our brain that we are happy (even if sometimes, we aren’t really) and in turn the brain releases endorphins otherwise known as the happy hormone.
You make others happy, too.
Smiling doesn’t only work its magic on you. It also affects the people you interact with. Research has shown that smiling is indeed contagious. So when you approach a person with a smiling face, that person can’t help but smile back. And when he or she does smile, that person’s body chemistry kicks in and happiness takes over.
Smiling, although a relatively simple act, can do wonders. Not only will it improve your self-esteem, but it has a load of other benefits as well. So what are you waiting for? Better start turning that frown upside-down.
